Getting Started

I offer approachable, beginner-friendly lessons in banjo, kids’ ukulele, and guitar, helping students build skills step by step. Each program supports steady progress while keeping the learning experience engaging and accessible.

Banjo Lessons

Most of my banjo students begin as complete beginners, so lessons are designed to be very approachable and beginner-friendly.

We start with a two-finger style that is easy to learn, enjoyable to play, and ideal for getting comfortable with the instrument. This gives students time to get used to placing their hands on the fretboard, developing coordination, and learning how to navigate the banjo with confidence.

In the first weeks, we focus on the basics of music—keeping steady rhythm, forming clear notes on the fretboard, and learning the right-hand two-finger plucking technique. Students learn several songs right away, helping them build confidence and a sense of progress early on.

After students complete the two-finger materials, they can choose one of two paths: clawhammer banjo or three-finger (bluegrass) style. I use two excellent, beginner-friendly commercial method books for these styles, each offering a clear, well-paced progression. I enrich these resources with lessons on chords, fretboard understanding, and practical music theory that directly supports their playing.

Once students choose a direction, they are introduced to important left-hand techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides. These techniques are taught through approachable, enjoyable exercises and then incorporated into songs that students can practice, perform, and work toward memorizing. Memorization is encouraged because it strengthens musical confidence, sharpens listening skills, and supports strong ear development.

Whether students pursue clawhammer or fingerstyle, we continue strengthening both left- and right-hand technique in a steady, supportive way. Over time, students build a meaningful repertoire of tunes along with confidence, fluency, and musical independence

Kids Ukulele Lessons

My ukulele program for kids is built around a carefully sequenced, step-by-step method that helps young learners develop solid musical skills while having fun. Students begin by learning to recognize high and low pitches, building early ear-training skills that support all future musicianship. Rhythm is introduced through clapping, counting, and simple patterns that help kids play with confidence.

Kids start with single-note melodies, learning proper technique, how to hold the instrument, and how to play clear, recognizable tunes. This melody-first approach gives students early success and helps them quickly build a repertoire of memorized songs they can proudly perform. As they progress, we gradually introduce strumming and chords at a comfortable, encouraging pace.

Once students have developed foundational skills, they begin learning how to read music—an important tool for long-term growth. All materials are presented in a kid-friendly, accessible way so that each new concept feels achievable.

The ukulele also serves as a great bridge to other instruments. Many students later move on to guitar or banjo, while others continue with the ukulele and build on the skills they’ve gained. Whichever direction they choose, students develop a strong musical foundation and lasting confidence.

Guitar Lessons

Guitar lessons are especially welcoming for beginners, and many of my students are adults picking up the instrument for the first time. We work through skills in a clear, step-by-step method that makes learning approachable and enjoyable. Lessons focus on traditional folk songs, giving students a familiar and engaging repertoire to grow with.

Students learn to read both standard notation and tablature, build a solid chord vocabulary, and practice from a curated songbook of traditional folk material. Music theory is introduced through practical, concrete examples that directly relate to the music we’re working on—making it understandable, relevant, and interesting.

We also focus on essential musicianship skills: developing your ear, building a sense of rhythm, becoming comfortable with the fretboard, and learning proper technique. For students interested in fingerstyle guitar, lessons include foundational fingerpicking techniques presented in a way that feels accessible and doable.

Every student comes with their own goals, abilities, and learning pace. Lessons are always adapted to fit each person’s needs, ensuring that the material feels appropriate, engaging, and achievable no matter your background or experience.
